The passing of the ceremonial chain...
Lion John Cottle handed over the ceremonial chain to Lion Ray Fursdon at a cider and pasty evening held at Higher Shorston, Holsworthy on Sunday June 30th 2013. The event was attended by some 40 Lions and their families, all there to thank John for his service over the last 12 months and to welcome Ray in his second stint as Lions President.
The past year was, perhaps, one of the most successful ones in recent times for Holsworthy & District Lions. Various fund-raising events including the Easter egg draw, the speed-pool tournaments in Holsworthy and Bude, and the ever-popular Lions BBQ raised in the region of £8,000.
The money raised was used to fund the Lions Fun Day for local children and adults with disabilities last November, and to fund the senior citizens' Christmas dinner, the children's Christmas party in the Memorial Hall, and the Christmas trees in the town square.
Thousands of pounds were also donated to many local and national charities and to local groups and individuals – from £50 to Tara Cousins who ran the London Marathon on behalf of St John Ambulance, to hundreds of pounds to the Devon and the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trusts, to Children's Hospice South West, and to Holsworthy Primary School to buy a new football kit.
