For a long time it looked like the 2014 Holsworthy Carnival would not have a Carnival Queen. The closing date for applications was extended, but still nobody came forward to volunteer. Unfortunately, there were also only two applicants for the position of Fairy Queen.

Ray Fursdon, Chairman of the Carnival Committee said: “In the end it all came down to a simple question of maths. We had a total of two positions to fill, and a total of two applicants. Once we looked at it that way, the decision was easy”.

The two applicants for Fairy Queen were Paige Davies (age 10) and Zara Kepple (age 7). The Carnival Committee asked Paige if she would consider being this year’s Carnival Queen as she is the eldest of the two applicants. Thankfully she agreed.

Paige and Zara (together with parents) met the entire Carnival Committee in the White Hart Hotel on Saturday 27th September. The Lions gave the two Queens a cheque for £300 each to help towards the cost of decorating their floats and buying dresses, etc.

Richard Hutchings (President of Holsworthy & District Lions) was keen to emphasise the fact that this year’s Carnival will go ahead as normal. He said: “There does seem to be some confusion in town as to whether there will be a Carnival at all this year. The answer is a categorical ‘yes’. There will be some changes to this year’s event – most notably that there will not be an afternoon procession – but the Carnival will definitely take place on November 15th”.
