It is a busy time of year for members of Holsworthy & District Lions. One week after Holsworthy Carnival and their annual Disabled Fun Day, they were back out putting up the Christmas trees in the Town Square – just as they have done every year since the 1980s. The putting up of the trees is actually a three day event. Lions Trevor Jones and Ray Fursdon choose and cut the trees on Friday, and various club members endured Saturday afternoon’s rain storms to drag the four trees half a mile from the places they fell to a trailer, ready to be transported into town on Sunday morning. As in 2014, the trees were kindly donated by Mr and Mrs Stevens from Chilsworthy.

At the same time as the Lions were putting up the Christmas trees, various members of Holsworthy Town Council, including Mayor John Allen, were putting up the Christmas lights in the Square in preparation for Friday’s turning on ceremony. The event starts at 5pm and features six local bands including Lionstar, “Twiggy”, and the Holsworthy Town Band. The Lions will be there cooking burgers and hot-dogs, and there will also be a hog roast and children’s entertainment.

The weekend afterwards, on Sunday 13th December, the Lions will be organising another one of their favourite events of the year. The annual Children’s Christmas party takes place in the Memorial Hall at 2pm and features a children’s entertainer, disco, and a visit from a very special guest all the way from the North Pole. Tickets are £1 each and are available from Coombes in the Square.

Club President Brian Withal expressed his gratitude to Mr & Mrs Stevens for donating the Christmas trees – and to Lion Paul Gould who brought in various pieces of farm machinery, including a cherry picker, to help put up the trees and the Christmas lights.
