It has been a busy few weeks for the members of Holsworthy & District Lions Club. At their March business meeting they elected a new President to take office in July. The club’s Treasurer, John Cottle, will take over from the current President Brian Withall in the summer. For the first time in 5 years the Lions also elected a Vice-President and Second Vice-President; meaning that the office of President is organised for at least the next 3 years. Past President Ray Fursdon will take over from John Cottle in July 2017, and Regimental Sergeant Major Ted England will become President in July 2018, assuming that he is back home from his current posting in Wales.

On Saturday 2nd April various club members did 2 hours shifts at Sainsbury’s in Bude raising money for the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal. And, on the same evening, the Lions organised their annual speed-pool contest in various pubs and clubs around the Holsworthy area. The contest involves teams of six attempting to pot as many balls as they can in one hour. This year’s competition was won by ‘The Shed’ with 534 balls potted in one hour. The highest individual scorer was Leo McDonnell with 96 balls. The competition raised more than £950 and the money will go towards the Lions’ annual “Fun-Day” for kids and adults with disabilities in November. The White Hart Hotel in Holsworthy raised the most money with £483. Club President Brian Withall offered his thanks to all the pubs for their continuing support.

On April 23rd this year, Holsworthy Lions will be celebrating their 40th anniversary at their annual Charter Dinner. The club was officially founded in 1975 but wasn’t chartered until St George’s Day the following year. Only one of the original Charter Members, former Holsworthy Portreeve Phil Cole, is still currently a member of the club. The club would like to extend an invitation to all former members and their families to join them at the upcoming Charter dinner on Saturday April 23rd at the Memorial Hall in Holsworthy. Club Secretary Andy Townsend will be attempting to contact all past members over the next couple of weeks. Anybody interested in attending should contact him by email on
