Holsworthy Lions make huge donation to Ovacome

Holsworthy & District Lions recently donated £1,850 to Ovacome. Ovacome has been supporting women affected by ovarian cancer and their families since the charity was founded in 1996. Their nurses give expert guidance, personalised clinical and research information, emotional support and resources for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer or worried they might be at risk. The donation was funded by the Lions’ annual Easter egg draw – with the money raised in the Holsworthy area being given to the charity.

When the new Club President takes up his post in July, he chooses a charity to support in the upcoming year. This year Club President Brian Withall chose Ovacome as it is a charity that is particularly close to the hearts of Lions Club members. This is especially so for Brian, and for the Club’s Secretary Andy Townsend, who have both lost their wives to ovarian or related cancers. Club Secretary Andy Townsend said, that for many reasons, this is a particularly worthwhile cause. Even more so as it does not get the publicity that it deserves even though approximately 6,500 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer each year in the UK.

I the past week the Lions also donated £100 to Daisy Morey of Holsworthy to help fund a trip to Thailand to do voluntary work with children, and £100 to Bradford Primary School to help buy new sports kit.
